The stereo microscope, also known as the "dissecting microscope" or "entity microscope", is a visual instrument delivering erect stereoscopic images.
It is widely applied in biology, medicine, agriculture and forestry, industry, and marine biology. Its main features are as follows:
Ø The two beams of light in the binocular tube are non‑parallel and form a certain included angle (also referred to as the stereo angle, typically 12°‑15°), which generates three‑dimensional stereoscopic imaging.
Ø It produces erect images convenient for operation and dissection. This is achieved by prisms below the eyepieces that invert the image.
Ø Although its magnification is lower than that of conventional microscopes, it provides a long working distance.
Ø It features a large depth of focus, facilitating observation of the full layer of the specimen under examination.
Ø It has a large field‑of‑view diameter for a broad observation range.
The current optical structure of a stereo microscope is as follows: a shared primary objective forms an image of the object. The two light beams after imaging are separated by two sets of intermediate objectives and zoom lenses to form a stereo angle, and then imaged through their respective eyepieces. Its magnification change is achieved by adjusting the distance between the intermediate lens groups, hence it is also known as the "continuous‑zoom stereo microscope".
